BMW i3 Diagnostic Report
Fault confirmed during testing: the “battery not being charged” warning appeared after start-up. Diagnostic fault code 22223B (EME internal fault / DC converter) was stored.
Serial data readings showed the DC voltage output was erratic: supply would be present then slowly drop towards battery nominal voltage, then rise again when switched off. A visual inspection of the EME plug connections found no obvious external issues.
We followed the test plan and confirmed the vehicle software was above the minimum level associated with this fault, supporting a hardware-related failure.
BMW i3 Repairs
The original EME was removed, stripped and inspected. Internal control boards were removed to access the DC converter section, where multiple MOSFETs were found to be blown.
An OEM recycled EME unit was sourced, tested and fitted. Final high-voltage cables were installed, faults were cleared, and the vehicle returned to READY mode and drove normally.
- Removed and stripped original EME for internal inspection
- Identified multiple blown MOSFETs on the DC converter section
- Sourced and tested an OEM recycled replacement EME
- Fitted replacement EME, completed HV cable refit, cleared faults
Resolution
With the replacement EME installed and the high-voltage system reassembled, the vehicle entered READY mode and was able to drive.
Following the repair:
- Fault codes cleared successfully
- Vehicle returned to normal operation (READY mode)
- DC-DC converter function restored via replacement unit
