Audi e-tron Diagnostic Report

Initially, we completed a road test to confirm the reported noise and verified a loud whining/milling sound on light load and overrun. Subsequently, with the vehicle raised we inspected the rear undertray area and coolant catch tank, then ran the drive unit and used a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise source.

Further analysis confirmed the noise was originating from the rear drive unit and the vehicle had multiple stored high-voltage isolation and motor/inverter-related fault codes consistent with an internal drive unit issue.

  • Road test completed to reproduce the concern and verify operating conditions
  • Workshop checks performed to localise the noise to the rear drive unit
  • Fault code set reviewed to support the diagnosis and define repair scope

Audi e-tron Repairs

First, we removed and stripped the rear drive unit for internal inspection. Next, we identified wear consistent with the reported noise and replaced internal bearings and seals as part of the repair. Finally, we reassembled the unit, vacuum-filled the cooling system, resealed, refitted, and carried out extended validation testing.

  • Stripped the drive unit and inspected internal components for damage and wear
  • Replaced internal bearings and seals as part of the overhaul
  • Reassembled, vacuum-filled coolant system, road tested, and cleared fault codes

Resolution

The vehicle was returned to service following reassembly and validation. After an extended road test, the drivetrain noise was no longer present and the fault codes were cleared.

  • Extended road test completed to confirm normal operation
  • Fault codes cleared following repair
  • Rear drive unit noise resolved under the original load/overrun conditions
