These units are prone to failure due to coolant seal degradation, which can lead to electrical isolation faults and internal bearing noise, often described as a milling sound, which in the some cases can lead to a required replacement of the stator.

Common LDU Failure Symptoms
Milling Noise
Often caused by bearing wear inside the drive unit and commonly described as a “milling” sound that gets worse with speed
Warning Messages
Occurs when coolant leaks past degraded seals into the motor or inverter, causing insulation faults
Loss of Power
Internal motor or inverter damage can reduce power or trigger limp mode
Coolant Leakage
Coolant seal failure allows ingress that quickly damages bearings and the stator

Coolant Delete
As part of our comprehensive Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) repair and overhaul service, we implement a coolant delete modification to eliminate a common source of future failures. This proactive step enhances long-term reliability.
Pressure & Electrical Isolation Test
We also replace all seals and gaskets with brand-new components to ensure a secure and leak-free system. To verify integrity and safety, we conduct both a pressure test and an electrical isolation test.
Renew Transmission Oil
To maintain optimal performance, we renew the transmission oil, ensuring smooth and efficient operation.
Replace All Critial Bearings
As part of the overhaul, we replace all critical bearings, including:
- Rotor Hybrid Bearings
- Input Shaft Hybrid Bearings
- Main Differential High-Speed Bearings
- Countershaft High-Speed Bearings
All work is backed by a 12-month warranty covering both parts and labour, giving you peace of mind and confidence in the quality of our service.

A really great independent set up that is desperately required by the general public given the poor support and hideously expensive Main Dealer options available.
